Hydraulic Studies and Development of the Water Supply System

Inquiry

Jubail Industrial City

Radian Engineering Consultants, in collaboration with ILF, undertook hydraulic studies and the assessment and development of the water-supply system for Jubail Industrial City, including reinforcement of the network through desalinated-water pipelines operated by Marafiq. The project was intended to improve supply efficiency and reliability, meet current demand and future growth, and ensure delivery of water in the required quantities and quality to established, unserved and expansion areas.

The works included assessment of existing and alternative water sources, determination of their adequacy and development potential, analysis of current and future water demand, and development and updating of the network hydraulic model using WaterGEMS. They also included analysis of flows, pressures and hydraulic balance under different operating scenarios, together with identification of network constraints and available capacity.

Based on the modelling results, studies were prepared to determine the optimum route for the approximately 1,500 mm-diameter main transmission pipeline from the new treatment plant to Jubail Industrial City, identify optimum connection points and assess their effects on present and future network performance. The North-West Marafiq Pumping Station (NWPS) and associated pipelines were also evaluated, required hydraulic, mechanical and electrical modifications were identified, and a water-hammer assessment was completed to determine appropriate protection systems.

The scope also extended to review and development of operation and maintenance plans for pumping stations and networks, preparation of a comprehensive operation and maintenance management plan, development of engineering alternatives and technical and commercial comparisons, and preparation of capital-expenditure estimates (CAPEX), culminating in the final tender documents.
